The session is devoted to research on urban green spaces (UGS) beyond the typical intensively managed urban parks and forests. Urban greenery has long been appreciated for its provisioning of multiple ecosystem services and its role in improving residents‘ health and well-being. However, in expanding cities, public parks and forests often remain underprovided; therefore, the role of other forms of green spaces, which would allow the citizens access and direct contact with nature, increases. We are interested in the functioning of urban ecosystems particularly focusing on various neglected UGS, such as brownfields, wastelands, vacant lots, and other areas, referred to as informal green spaces (IGS), which play a significant role in ecosystem provisioning to urban dwellers but are not recognized as formal green spaces. We would like to include contributions regarding the adaptation of UGS to meet various goals and needs of residents and communities, including recreational needs and purposes. The presentations may include (but are not restricted to) aspects of informal greenery such as: biodiversity, social and cultural value, climate adaptation, monitoring and mapping (in particular applications of new technologies based on e.g. aerial and satellite remote sensing; UAS photogrammetry and imaging). There is also space for forecasting models and tools supporting the decision-making process and spatial planning. We also encourage presentations discussing the potential of incorporation of existing abandoned areas as part of the city’s green infrastructure, both from the economic perspective, as well as social approval, and the potential to provide various ecosystem services to the residents.
